GUIDING PRINCIPLES ABOUT ANIMAL WELFARE
Welfare generally refers to “the quality of an animal’s life as it is experienced by an individual animal”. In its holistic sense, welfare encompasses not only the health and physical wellbeing of the animal, but the animal’s psychological wellbeing and the ability to express its own important behaviour. ZOO COFFEE recognizes the Five Freedoms as the basis for addressing farm animal welfare within our supply chain. These are defined as:
1.Freedom from hunger & thirst by ready access to fresh water & a diet to maintain full health & vigour.
2.Freedom from discomfort by appropriate environment including shelter & comfortable resting area.
3.Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
4.Freedom to express normal behaviour by providing sufficient space, proper facilities & company of the animal’s own kind.
5.Freedom from fear & distress by ensuring conditions & care which avoid mental suffering.
Meeting these freedoms is essential in order to avoid suffering and poor welfare. However, there is increasing recognition and awareness that it is necessary for animals to experience positive emotions in order to have good welfare and a high quality of life. Therefore, at Zoo Coffee we also recognize a sixth freedom defined as:
6. Freedom to undergo positive experiences - by providing appropriate conditions to experience positive emotions (eg. feeling contented, pleasure, relaxed, excited).
While specific practices vary, all our suppliers should conform with these guiding principles. And grounded on those, ZOO COFFEE will continuously pay attention to the living conditions of farm animals and set specific commitments and targets per species.
COMMITMENTS & TARGETS
At ZOO COFFEE we are committing to phase out the use of eggs produced in cage systems (including combi and limited access systems) by 2025. Our commitment applies to shell eggs and egg products. We will actively promote cage-free eggs in the industry and within the company. We will work with our suppliers to support the conversion of their production to true cage-free systems and gradually estabish cooperation with more cage-free egg suppliers.
